Why we made the streak forgiving
Streaks are a clever motivator. They’re also, for a lot of people, a fast track to quitting. The moment a perfect run breaks — a sick week, a work crunch, a life thing — the streak resets to zero, and that zero can feel like a verdict: you failed, start over. Plenty of people don’t start over. They just close the app.
That’s the opposite of what we want.
A slip shouldn’t erase you
Coax keeps a streak because momentum feels good — but ours is forgiving. Miss a week and we bridge the gap instead of wiping the slate. Come back after a break and you’re greeted with “Welcome back,” not a guilt trip. The number is there to celebrate consistency, never to punish a gap.
Encouragement, not surveillance
This is a small example of a bigger principle. Every feature in Coax gets checked against one question: does this help fitness fit your life and lower stress, or does it add pressure? If a design leans on guilt, loss-aversion, or shame to get you moving, it’s working against the mission — even if it “boosts engagement” in the short term.
A workout app should feel like a coach in your corner, not a manager tracking your attendance.
So the streak forgives. The reminders stay gentle. And the goal is always the same: keep you moving for years, not stressed for weeks.
